What is the difference between a hot water heat pump and a normal hot water storage tank?

A hot water heat pump uses free heat from the ambient air to heat the water – similar to a refrigerator, but in reverse. A conventional hot water storage tank heats the water directly with electricity. The heat pump is significantly more efficient: 1 kWh of electricity generates 3-4 kWh of heat, while an electric storage tank only delivers 1 kWh of heat.

Is a hot water heat pump worthwhile for me?

A hot water heat pump is particularly worthwhile if you currently use an electric boiler or a gas/oil heating system for hot water. It is especially efficient in basements with a washing machine, dryer, or heating system, as it utilizes the waste heat from these appliances. The investment typically pays for itself within 5-7 years through lower operating costs.

Can a hot water heat pump also heat my house?

No, a domestic hot water heat pump (also called a hot water heat pump) is used exclusively for hot water production and not for heating. It has a significantly lower output (1,5-2,5 kW) than heating heat pumps. However, it reduces the load on your main heating system – especially in summer, the heating can remain completely switched off.

What are the operating costs of a hot water heat pump?

Operating costs depend on hot water consumption and efficiency. A four-person household consumes approximately 600-800 kWh of electricity per year, which at €0.30/kWh equates to roughly €180-240. By comparison, a gas boiler costs about €81 per month for the same amount of hot water – almost nine times as much. Using self-generated solar power further reduces costs.

Can I combine the hot water heat pump with photovoltaics?

Yes, combining it with photovoltaics is ideal. Modern hot water heat pumps often have a PV interface (PV-ready) and can therefore preferentially run when your PV system is producing electricity. This increases your self-consumption and makes you even more independent from the grid. With self-generated solar power, the heat pump operates almost free of charge.
