What legal changes will occur regarding balcony power plants in 2024?

From 2024, new EU directives will simplify the installation and use of balcony power plants. These directives and regulations include simplified registration procedures and higher permissible power outputs for the plants, without introducing new, extensive bureaucratic hurdles. You will therefore no longer need to fill out thousands of applications to operate your own balcony power plant, with or without storage. 

The changes are intended to make the use of solar energy more accessible in general and to accelerate the energy transition with every newly installed model. The new regulations could also improve safety standards and further simplify installation.

From what point are 800-watt balcony power plants allowed?

Since January 2024, balcony power plants with a capacity of up to 800 watts have been exempt from permitting requirements. The new regulations surrounding self-contained power plants at your home help to reduce the previously enormous bureaucratic hurdles and make solar energy more accessible and available. The higher capacity limits will help you cover a larger portion of your electricity needs directly on-site.

Are 2000-watt balcony power plants allowed?

Balcony power plants with a power output of 2000 watts or more are generally permitted; however, different regulations apply to systems with this power output than to smaller systems from our shop. Systems with an output exceeding 800 watts must be registered with your grid operator. Additional safety measures may also need to be considered. Please contact the relevant authorities for information on the applicable regulations.

What is the daily output of an 800-watt solar power system?

An 800-watt solar panel can produce between 4 and 5 kWh of electricity on a sunny day. However, the actual output depends on the amount of sunlight, the orientation, and the tilt angle of the panels. Generally, the energy generated is sufficient to power your household appliances such as refrigerators, computers, and lamps. This eliminates many of your everyday electricity costs entirely.

Is it possible to operate two balcony power plants?

Yes, it is possible to operate two balcony power plants on your balcony simultaneously, provided the output power of the inverters does not exceed the maximum permissible feed-in power and your installed electrical safety devices are designed for this. Generally, a balcony power plant does not need to be throttled. Only our models with 4 modules require an inverter with a higher output power – you can throttle this inverter to 800 W to meet the registration requirements. 

Is a balcony power plant with a Schuko plug allowed?

As of June 2024, the use of a Schuko plug for balcony power plants is permitted, but it should be protected by a residual current device (RCD). The RCD ensures electrical safety and prevents potential hazards from fault currents.

Yes. You must register your balcony power plant in the so-called Market Master Data Register. Registration must be completed within one month of first putting your power plant into operation.
