This is how your system works day in and day out

From sunlight on the roof to warm water at the tap – fully automatic and maintenance-free.

Solar panels generate electricity

Your PV modules on the roof convert sunlight into electrical energy – this happens in all weather conditions, and is particularly productive from spring to autumn.

The heating element uses the excess energy

As soon as more electricity is generated than your household needs, the heating element activates automatically and continuously adjusts the power to the available surplus.

Storage stores heat

The heated water remains temperature-stable in the insulated storage tank and is available around the clock for showering, bathing and kitchen use.

Direct current or alternating current: Which solution is suitable?

Whether directly from the module or via the house's electrical grid – both approaches convert solar power into hot water. The difference lies in the system design.

DC solution

my-PV DC ELWA – Directly from the module

Solar panels feed direct current directly into the built-in heating element without conversion losses. The integrated MPP tracker automatically optimizes the yield.

  • No inverter needed – saves costs and space
  • Purely off-grid operation without network registration
  • 2 kW output, continuously adjustable from approx. 200 W
  • Installation via plug & play in just a few minutes
Ideal for: Smaller households, retrofitting existing storage systems, systems without inverters
AC solution

AC ELWA 2 & AC-THOR – Via the home network

The AC devices operate using alternating current from your existing PV system. They specifically utilize the surplus power that would otherwise flow into the grid.

  • Can be integrated into existing energy management systems
  • Compatible with battery storage (battery has priority)

Warm showers powered by the sun – month after month

Your PV heating element doesn't just work in the height of summer. It also delivers noticeable results during the transitional seasons.

High summer (June – August)

The conventional heating system remains off. The heating element takes over the entire water heating, and the storage tank regularly reaches its target temperature solely through solar energy.

Transition months (March – May & Sep – Oct)

Even with moderate sunlight, the heating element covers a large part of the daily energy requirement. On sunny days, the gas heating is not needed.

Winter months (Nov – Feb)

Even at low sun angles, the heating element preheats the storage tank. The conventional heating system has to work less – this measurably reduces wear on the burner.

All year round: Boiler relief

Every kWh supplied by the heating element reduces the number of burner starts in your heating system. This extends its lifespan and sustainably lowers maintenance costs.

Is your home ready for solar hot water?

Four points that show whether a PV heating element system is suitable for your building.

Answers regarding solar water heating

Do I need a new hot water storage tank, or will my existing one still work?
In most cases, you can continue using your existing storage tank. The only requirement is a free 1-inch connection for installing the heating element. Most hot water storage tanks with a capacity of 150 liters or more have this connection option. If your tank doesn't have a free connection or the volume is too small for your household, PVundSO offers suitable TESY hot water storage tanks with a 200-liter capacity.
What is the difference between DC ELWA, AC ELWA 2 and AC-THOR?
The DC ELWA (2 kW) connects directly to solar panels and operates off-grid without an inverter – ideal for simple retrofits. The AC ELWA 2 (3,5 kW) uses AC power from the mains and is suitable for existing grid-connected PV systems. The AC-THOR is a power manager that intelligently controls a separate heating element (3 kW or 9 kW) and can be integrated into more complex systems with battery storage and smart home technology.
Can I combine a PV heating element with a battery storage system?
Yes, the AC units (AC ELWA 2 and AC-THOR) work seamlessly with a battery storage system. The intelligent control system automatically prioritizes charging the battery. Only when the storage system is full is the excess solar power converted into hot water. This allows you to optimally utilize your PV yield in two forms of storage: electrical and thermal.
How is the water temperature regulated and protected from overheating?
All my-PV heating elements feature integrated temperature sensors and adjustable thermostats (approx. 34–78 °C). The device switches off automatically once the set target temperature is reached. Additionally, a safety temperature limiter is installed, which immediately interrupts the heating process in the event of unusually high temperatures.
What happens on days without enough sun?
Your existing heating system (gas, oil, heat pump) remains fully operational as a backup. On cloudy days or in winter, it automatically takes over hot water production as needed. The AC ELWA 2 also offers an optional hot water backup function, which, if necessary, uses mains power to guarantee a minimum temperature.
Do I need a WiFi meter and what exactly does it do?
The my-PV WiFi Meter measures the current electricity consumption and PV generation in the home network. It informs the AC devices (AC ELWA 2, AC-THOR) how much surplus energy is currently available – allowing them to precisely adjust their output to the solar supply. The DC ELWA does not require a WiFi Meter, as it operates directly on the solar module and has its own MPP tracker.

Now you can turn your excess solar energy into hot water.

Heating elements, complete sets and expert advice – all from one source at PVundSO.

PV hot water storage tanks from brand manufacturers at PVundSO

A PV hot water storage tank uses the electricity from your photovoltaic system specifically for hot water preparation, thus significantly increasing the self-consumption of your solar system. The principle is simple: An electric heating element in the tank heats your domestic hot water whenever the PV system generates more energy than is needed in the household. At PVundSO, you will find all the components for such a system from a specialized retailer.

The range of photovoltaic systems with heating elements includes both individual heating elements and pre-configured sets with solar modules. The manufacturer my-PV supplies the core technology: continuously variable heating elements that adjust their output to the available solar surplus with second-by-second precision. From the compact 2 kW solution to the powerful 9 kW system, the range covers a wide variety of requirements.

All photovoltaic products in the shop are exempt from VAT. This legal regulation applies to all PV components and significantly reduces the investment costs for your PV hot water storage tank. PVundSO also offers free shipping within Germany for orders over €100.

Significantly reduce energy costs with the PV hot water storage tank

Hot water preparation accounts for roughly 12 to 15% of total energy consumption in an average household. For a family of four, this equates to approximately 2.000 to 3.000 kWh per year. Those who cover this demand with their own photovoltaic system can reduce their annual energy costs by a three-figure sum, depending on the system size and consumption profile.

The financial leverage lies in the price difference between self-generated and purchased electricity. While a kWh from the energy supplier currently costs around 30 to 35 cents, a typical rooftop solar system generates electricity for 6 to 11 cents per kWh. Every kilowatt-hour stored in your PV hot water storage tank saves you the difference. With a hot water demand of 2.000 kWh and a solar coverage rate of 50 to 70%, this results in annual savings of 200 to 400 euros.

Additionally, you significantly reduce the load on your conventional heating system during the sunnier months. From April to September, the PV hot water storage tank can handle the entire hot water supply on many days. This protects the burner or heat pump and measurably extends its lifespan.

Key performance data for photovoltaic hot water storage tanks

Three key factors come into play when setting up a photovoltaic hot water storage system. The installed PV capacity on the roof, the heating element output, and the storage volume must be coordinated for the system to operate efficiently. The following table provides an overview of proven configurations for different household sizes.

Budget PV output heater storage volume Solar coverage rate
1 to 2 persons from 3 kWp DC ELWA 2 kW 150 to 200 liters 50 to 70%
3 to 4 persons from 5 kWp AC ELWA 2 3,5 kW 200 to 300 liters 45 to 65%
5+ people from 8 kWp AC-THOR 3 to 9 kW 300 to 500 liters 40 to 60%

The 2 kW DC ELWA is particularly well-suited for smaller households with an existing PV system . It requires no separate inverter and connects directly to the solar panels. The integrated MPPT controller automatically optimizes the yield based on sunlight intensity. Larger households benefit from the AC ELWA 2 or the AC-THOR, which operate via the mains electricity supply and can be integrated into an existing energy management system.

The solar coverage rate indicates what proportion of your annual hot water needs are met by your PV system. Even with a conservative design, most systems achieve a value of 45 to 65% on average throughout the year. This percentage is significantly higher in the summer months and regularly reaches full coverage on sunny days.

Combine hot water storage tank with heating element and PV system

An existing hot water storage tank can be converted into a solar-powered system with just a few components. The only requirement is a free 1,5-inch threaded connection, which is present on most tanks with a capacity of 150 liters or more. The heating element is screwed in, connected to the PV system, and the system is ready for operation.

There are two connection options. The DC version connects solar modules directly to the heating element. The integrated controller continuously adjusts the power output to the current solar supply. The AC version utilizes the existing inverter and the household electrical grid. It offers greater flexibility for integration into a complete system with battery storage and intelligent energy management.

Your conventional heating system remains fully operational and serves as a backup for days with low solar yield. It largely remains idle in summer, while automatically switching on as needed during the transitional seasons. This combination maximizes the benefits of your PV system without compromising the reliability of your hot water supply.
