Solar surplus Your warmth
Heating elements for buffer storage tanks from my-PV seamlessly convert unused PV electricity into hot water and heating support – easy to retrofit, intelligently controlled.
From the roof to warm water – in three steps
The power manager acts as the control center between your PV system and the heating element. This is how the automatic process works in everyday use.
Recognize surplus
The WiFi meter or your inverter reports, down to the second, how much solar power is currently available – after deducting household consumption.
Controlling power output
The power manager controls the heating element continuously in 50-watt increments. Whether 300 W or 9.000 W are available – it uses exactly what the sun provides.
Store heat
The buffer storage tank absorbs the heat and retains it for many hours. In the evening, you can shower using solar energy – completely without drawing power from the grid.

Frequently asked questions about the heating element in the buffer tank
No. The my-PV heating elements fit all standard hot water and buffer storage tanks with a 1,5-inch screw-in flange – this is standard on most tanks. Please check beforehand whether your tank has a free flange connection and whether the immersion depth is sufficient (max. 745 mm for the 9 kW model).
Yes. Thanks to the stepless control, the heating element starts working even with just a few hundred watts of excess power. On cloudy days, it heats up more slowly but utilizes every available wattage. The AC ELWA 2 and the AC-THOR also offer an optional hot water backup that switches on mains power when needed.
The AC models (AC ELWA 2, AC-THOR) are compatible with over 70 inverter manufacturers, including Fronius, SMA, SolarEdge, Kostal, and Huawei. If your model is not directly supported, the optional my-PV WiFi Meter ensures manufacturer-independent compatibility.
The AC-THOR prioritizes automatically: First, the battery is charged, only then is the remaining excess used for heat generation. Water is the most cost-effective storage medium – in combination with a battery, you achieve an optimal self-consumption rate without the two systems interfering with each other.
The DC ELWA can generally be connected without a qualified electrician, as it connects directly to the solar panels and not to the mains electricity supply. For the AC models, installation by a qualified electrician is recommended – in particular, the three-phase 9 kW heating element must be professionally connected and protected.
The AC-THOR and AC-THOR 9s feature Modbus interfaces (TCP and RTU) and are compatible with Loxone, Home Assistant, KNX, and other smart home systems. Consumption data and temperatures can also be monitored remotely via the my-PV app.

Heating element for buffer storage tanks from brand manufacturers at PVundSO
An immersion heater for buffer storage tanks converts excess solar power directly into usable heat, significantly increasing the efficiency of your photovoltaic system. Instead of feeding this electricity into the grid at low feed-in tariffs, you can use it for hot water preparation and heating support. PVundSO exclusively carries products from my-PV, one of Europe's leading manufacturers of solar-based heat generation, in this category.
Our range of heating elements and immersion heaters includes both DC-coupled and AC-coupled models with outputs from 2 to 9 kW. The DC ELWA operates directly from your solar panels without an inverter, while the AC ELWA 2 and the AC-THOR are connected via the household electrical grid. Both versions can be retrofitted into almost any existing buffer storage tank and require no complex modifications.
All photovoltaic products at PVundSO are available with 0% VAT in accordance with current legislation. This significantly reduces the purchase costs and shortens the amortization period of your system. The shop also offers suitable solar modules and accessories for cabling and installation, so you can obtain all components from a single source.
Convert unused solar power into heat with the solar heating element.
Many photovoltaic systems generate significantly more electricity at midday than a household consumes at the same time. Without storage or a solar heating element, this surplus flows into the public grid, receiving a feed-in tariff that is far below the cost of purchasing electricity from the grid. A heating element in a buffer storage tank utilizes precisely this surplus and converts it into thermal energy, which can be stored for many hours.
The economic advantage becomes clear in a simple calculation. A kilowatt-hour of solar power from your own roof costs between 5 and 10 cents to produce, depending on the system size. Providing the same amount of heat via a gas heating system costs around 10 to 14 cents per kWh. For a four-person household with a daily hot water consumption of approximately 40 to 60 liters per person, the savings add up to several hundred euros annually.
The heating element works particularly efficiently in combination with a PV system of 3 kWp or more . From this system size, a surplus of energy is regularly generated in summer, which can be almost entirely converted into hot water. Even on sunny days in spring and autumn, you benefit from solar heat generation and reduce the use of your conventional heating system.
Key performance data for the heating element for buffer storage tanks
Choosing the right immersion heater for your buffer tank depends on three factors: the size of your PV system, your daily hot water demand, and the volume of your existing storage tank. my-PV offers models with power outputs from 2 to 9 kW, suitable for different household sizes and requirements. The following overview highlights the key technical differences.
| Model | Offering | Link | field of application. |
|---|---|---|---|
| DC ELWA | 2 kW | DC (without inverter) | Retrofitting, small systems |
| AC ELWA 2 | 3,5 kW | AC (home network) | Single-family homes, hot water |
| AC-THOR | 3 kW | AC (home network) | Hot water and heating |
| AC-THOR 9s | 9 kW | AC (home network) | Large storage capacity, high demand |
The DC ELWA is particularly suitable for existing systems, as it operates independently of the mains electricity supply. Solar modules are connected directly, and the integrated MPPT controller automatically optimizes the yield. For households with a buffer storage tank of 300 liters or more, the AC ELWA 2 or the AC-THOR with a nominal output of 3 to 9 kW are recommended.
A proven rule of thumb applies to sizing: approximately 50 to 80 liters of storage volume are required for every 1 kW of heating element output. A 200-liter buffer tank is therefore ideally suited to the 2 kW DC ELWA, while a 500-liter tank can utilize the full capacity of the AC-THOR 9s. PVundSO will be happy to advise you on the right combination for your specific situation.
Photovoltaic heating element and conventional heating in combination
A photovoltaic immersion heater acts as an intelligent supplement to your existing heating system. In summer, it takes over the entire hot water supply, while in the transitional seasons it significantly reduces your heating system's fuel consumption. The conventional system only kicks in when solar power is insufficient. This noticeably reduces your annual gas or oil consumption and increases the efficiency of your PV system.
Installation in the existing buffer tank is straightforward. The heating element is inserted via the standard 1,5-inch screw-in flange, which most tanks come with as standard. In AC-coupled systems, a hybrid inverter automatically manages the energy distribution between household electricity, battery storage, and heat generation. This allows you to achieve maximum self-consumption without manual intervention.
In the long term, your entire building technology benefits from this expansion. The conventional heating system runs for fewer hours and wears out more slowly. At the same time, the self-consumption rate of your PV system increases to 60 to 80%, which significantly improves the overall cost-effectiveness of the solar investment. Especially with rising energy prices, the combination of photovoltaics and thermal storage is becoming increasingly important for homeowners.
