Where you need to register your balcony power plant
Your new balcony power plant still needs to be registered, but your grid operator is no longer permitted to object to it. You no longer even need to register the power plant with them. Before the change in the law, the process took several weeks; now you only need to register your balcony power plant with the Market Master Data Register.

This registration is done online and usually only takes a few minutes. We recommend that you have all the necessary documents and information ready to complete the registration as quickly as possible. You will find out exactly what information and data you will need in a few minutes.
First, we would like to briefly discuss the Market Master Data Register and explain your registration deadline, because it is important to note: Every owner of a balcony power plant must register it with the data register within a specific timeframe. Failure to do so will result in fines.
The market master data register
Before registering your balcony power plant in the Market Master Data Register, you'll certainly want to know who actually receives your data and information. The Market Master Data Register is maintained by the Federal Network Agency and is therefore a public and legally binding register. It records and registers all installations that produce and consume gas or electricity. Your smaller balcony power plant will soon be among these installations; however, the register also contains data on large power plants and photovoltaic systems.
Since the market master data register has now switched entirely to online registration for balcony power plants, you no longer need to write letters or fill out forms by hand. During the process, the data register will provide you with all the necessary forms, which you can complete on your computer in no time. Once the forms are completed and the data and information have been submitted, the registration is complete.
Registration deadline for balcony power plants
There is indeed a registration period within which your balcony power plant must be registered. Fortunately, this period is very generous and only begins with the initial commissioning of your power plant. Therefore, you can easily... Buy a balcony power plant, first install it at your leisure and then try it out.
If you decide to continue using the system, it must be registered with the Market Master Data Register within one month. Since the registration process will only take you about 10 minutes, this deadline is usually not a problem at all.
What you need to register your balcony power plant
Since all the necessary forms are already available for you in the online register, you don't need to worry about obtaining the applications. To register your balcony power plant, you only need to have some technical and personal data ready to keep the process as quick as possible. We will now explain step-by-step how to proceed with the registration and what information is required.
Required information and registration instructions
Please have your personal information such as first and last name, email address, and similar details ready. Some technical information regarding your balcony power plant will also be necessary, as the market master data register stores not only your name and your system, but also the specific data of the system itself.
Here's how to start the registration process:
-
- Your registration begins when you visit the website of the Market Master Data Register. On this page, you will have four different options. Please select the first option, “Registration of a facility or market participant.”
- Now select one of the three options again and click the "Solar system" button. Make your first selection once more and click the "Plug-in solar system (so-called balcony power plant)" button.
- You will now be asked if you are already registered in the market master data register. If so, you will be prompted to log in with your details. If not, please continue filling out the form.
- You will then be asked questions about whether the system is operated privately or jointly, and whether it has already been put into operation. After providing all the answers, select the "Start registration" button.
- Please now enter all personal information, such as your first and last name and your email address, into the buttons provided.
- Then enter the exact location of your system. You may be asked for the specific installation location in your house – these questions are based on previous answers and therefore not relevant to everyone.
- Then note when your power plant was commissioned or when the initial commissioning is planned. Normally, a date will be requested.
- Specify how many solar panels your balcony power plant has and the total power output of all panels combined. For example, if you want to register a balcony power plant with two solar panels, each with a power output of 420 Wp, the total power output of your power plant is 840 Wp.
- The maximum output power of the inverter must also be specified. This must not exceed 800 W and can be found in the manual, installation instructions, or datasheet of your inverter.
- Finally, you will be asked for your meter number. You can find this on the front of the meter or on your electricity bills. After these steps, your balcony power plant is registered and ready to go.
Information that is irrelevant or no longer relevant
You do not need to provide any information about the type of meter you have. Accordingly, you can also use a Ferraris meter that runs backwards without any problems. Furthermore, the requirement for written construction and commissioning approval from your network operator is naturally waived.
Note: Please note that the backward-running meter must still be replaced with a new, digital model within 4 months! Therefore, please inform your network operator of the desired upgrade promptly and arrange an appointment within the deadline.

Legal aspects of registering a balcony power plant
Once you register your balcony power plant, or have already done so, you will face few obligations but many new rights. For example, the obligations of a balcony power plant owner include complying with the registration requirement and throttling excessively powerful inverters. Your new rights, on the other hand, stipulate that no VAT may be charged on the delivery of photovoltaic systems until the end of 2026.
Read on to learn more about the mandatory and legal aspects, and feel free to also look at the additional information that follows.
Your duties
The first and most important legal obligation is to register your balcony power plant within the one-month period. Once you have plugged in and tested your power plant, it must be registered with the Market Master Data Register within one month.

Furthermore, you must ensure that your new balcony power plant meets the technical and safety requirements. These include, for example, the DIN VDE-AR-N 4105 guideline: This standard broadly defines the safety standards for balcony power plants. If you are unsure whether your desired power plant complies with this standard, please feel free to consult our [link to relevant information]. balcony power plants All our products eliminate your worries about safety-related aspects and can be easily plugged in and used safely.
Finally, you are obliged to regularly check the installation of your balcony power plant after registration and to replace any new modules or Storage for balcony power plants New meters must be registered directly in the market master data register. Similarly, new meters installed by your network operator must also be registered.
Your rights
If you haven't yet registered or purchased a balcony power plant, the new rights will be particularly beneficial to you, as it's not just homeowners who have been granted easier access to such systems. Tenants also have a legally sanctioned right to install one! Therefore, if you live in a rented apartment and want to register and use a balcony power plant, your landlord cannot simply refuse this request.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
A balcony power plant can usually be installed by you personally. Even if it is a Balcony power plant with storage If it is a matter of principle, you are allowed to install it yourself on your terrace, roof or balcony.
Solar panels mounted on your roof are often a different story: While you are allowed to install them yourself, the wiring and commissioning usually require a professional. If you'd like to avoid installation costs and waiting for an appointment, you can also install our larger power plants, such as the aforementioned 1700W balcony power plant (which can be throttled down to 800W), yourself, as we use plug-and-play technology in every unit.
Note: Whether a balcony power plant, or solar system, can be installed independently depends on its output. Please inform yourself about the applicable regulations beforehand.
To avoid having to throttle the inverter or going through a more complex registration process, the output power of your inverter must not exceed 800 W. However, the power output of the solar panels can exceed this limit. Therefore, it is highly recommended to purchase a balcony power system with an inverter that can be throttled.
With this type of registration, it depends on whether you want to operate the balcony power plant directly with storage or whether the battery will be retrofitted later. Direct registration of a Balcony power plant with storage This also works via the form of the market master data register. In this form, you can then enter technical data about the storage system.
If, however, the storage system is retrofitted, you must register it separately with the Market Master Data Register and have it assigned to your balcony power plant. This process is also necessary for all new or additional solar modules.
Sharing your balcony power plant is now permitted! The consent of all parties should be documented in writing and ideally discussed with the owners' or tenants' association. Please note that the registration of the power plant in the market master data register differs in this case.
Only individual accounts are permitted in the register – this means you must also provide all personal data of the other tenants or owners. You must also ensure that it is clearly identifiable and recorded how the electricity is distributed among the individual parties. We recommend briefly discussing the registration with an employee of the Federal Network Agency to avoid any problems with registering your new system.
Yes! Since balcony power plants are considered independent systems, they are not included in the total output of the solar panels on the roof. Therefore, if you would like to operate an additional power plant on your balcony, this is perfectly possible. Registering this power plant is also the same process as described in our explanation.
You'd like to operate and register a balcony power plant, but don't know how to finance it most cost-effectively? Then it's advisable to look into the KfW and state funding programs in your region. KfW (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau) loans 270 and 275 specifically address the financing of balcony power plants, while many German states offer additional measures to promote renewable solar energy.
Alternatively, the BEG (Federal Funding for Efficient Buildings) may be able to assist you with financing by offering grants or low-interest loans. Furthermore, if your system does not exceed 10 kWp, you can be exempt from income tax on its operation. Of course, the feed-in tariff under the Renewable Energy Sources Act can also provide financial support. This tariff is paid to you for the electricity you feed into the grid.
The requirement to register your balcony power plant with the grid operator was abolished on May 16, 2024. This requirement was eliminated as part of the "Solar Package I" and was part of measures to simplify the operation and registration of high-performance balcony power plants. The simpler registration process, along with the increase in the power limit from 600 W to 800 W, is intended to promote the advancement and expansion of renewable energies in Germany.
Therefore, the requirement to first obtain approval from your network operator was eliminated. Before May 16, 2024, the network operator could even file an objection and thus simply prohibit you from registering and using a balcony power plant.
